SOLAS 2008 REPORT

We are very grateful for the help we have received from local businesses, the Rockabill Film Club, Skerries Community Association and our main sponsors, Fingal County Council and Ardmore Sound . Also, we would like to recognise the kind donations from NCCRI and Shane Holland Design Workshops. We are also grateful for all the support and guidance we received from Access Cinema and Clones Film Festival.

The Festival began with the Ardmore Sound Short Film Competition. Aimed at new filmmakers and recent graduates, it aims to showcase the best of new Irish talent.

The short film competition was followed by a sound production workshop. Ardmore Sound founder and chair, Paul Moore, gave a workshop on film sound at this year's festival. This was a great opportunity to learn more about this crucial aspect of filmmaking. The audience attending the workshop was a mixture of all ages, from young teenagers to students and adults.

Our best attended film of the day was the children's film E.T. the Extra Terrestrial. The venue was filled to capacity and demonstrated a huge interest in family-related films in Skerries. As a consequence we have examined various options to increase the number of screenings and venue options for family films.

Our main feature film was La Vie En Rose. A French-language film was chosen partly to mark Skerries twinning with the canton of Guichon in France. It was important that the festival built upon existing community structures. Yet again the tickets were sold out and people had to be turned away at the door.

After the film there was a closing party in the foyer of the Sailing Club with entertainment from local traditional musicians.

DCU TEAM WINS BEST SHORT AT SOLAS FILM FESTIVAL 2008

Graduate filmmakers from Dublin City University won the Ardmore Sound
Best Short Film award for their animation Tré Hugger. It was selected from a short-list of ten films from film schools around the country. Second place in the competition went to the very popular Out the Road by Genevieve Murphy of Griffith College and third place went to the film Micko by Tom Byrne, also a graduate of Griffith College.

With a strong environmental message, the five-minute animation Tré Hugger: Boy Inventor by Scott Bryan, Paddy O'Hanlon and Brent Grainger, is the first in a planned series of films about a boy who realises his powers of invention can make the world a better place.

The team, pictured above, received an award designed by Shane Holland who has also designed major awards such as the 02 Ability Awards, the Irish Times Property Advertising Award and the new Tidy Towns award.

ET: THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL (1982)
He is afraid. He is alone. He is three million light years from home.

After a long search we finally managed to track down a copy of what is one of the world's favourite children's movies - ET: The extra terrestrial. Word is that the movie's US distributers are getting ready for a big relaunch of the film next year so this is a good time before it goes global all over again. Already 26 years old, this is Spielberg at his best and possibly one your children haven't seen already.

Please note: Children should be accompanied by an adult . Tickets €2 per person

SKERRIES FILM FESTIVAL
Launching midsummer day
June 21st 2008

Solas - Skerries Film Festival - is launching on midsummer day, Saturday June 21st 2008 at The Sailing Club in Skerries harbour. This year it's a one-day party to put the festival on the map but will become a major four-day event planned around mid-summer every year. Check out this year's programme here.

Celebrating the best of Irish and international cinema, Solas aims to be a meeting point for filmmakers and film lovers alike and will have at its heart a short film competition for student and graduate filmmakers sponsored by Ardmore Sound. The best short film will receive a day's professional sound production in Ardmore Sound in Wicklow - a prize worth more than 2,000. For more information click here.

Skerries was chosen as a location because of the great fondness Irish people have for this north Dublin seaside town and its ability to attract plenty of visitors to its beaches, bars, restaurants and nightlife. It's also a great focal point for all of Fingal where the arts and filmmaking have always been strong. We are very grateful for the help we have received from local businesses, the Rockabill Film Club and our main sponsors, Fingal County Council and Ardmore Sound. Getting a new festival off the ground is hard work so make sure and come along to give Solas Film Festival the beginning it deserves.
