This workshop will focus on the 'big picture' of the editor's role, rather than the technicalities of the job. This means looking at how we relate to the material in the edit, listening and adapting to the director's style and vision, and being aware of the medium and genre. I'll touch on the importance of pace and structure - how we decide what to include and what to omit. We'll look at movie clips and how the editor made their creative choices. We'll talk about both documentary and drama and how all films are made three times: in the writing, in the shoot and in the edit. In the edit every film takes on a life and a language of its own that ideally is teased out rather than imposed.
